THE HAUNTED AND THE UNHOMELY

Blade Runner (1982) shows L.A. in 2019. It is bleak and despairing and it’s apparent that everyone has given up on the world and left it in a dilapidated condition to live on off world colonies. Every scene is dark and dirty. The movie has familiar icons like the Yukon Hotel and the Bradbury building but they have been left to rot much like the whole planet. Like in The Golem and Metropolis, Sebastian the inventor lives in an older house that has a haunted and unhomely feel. Sebastian lives in the Bradbury building; it is in bad condition and is boarded up. His many robots/ toys around his apartment give a very haunted feel, you almost expect them to be alive, especially when one of the replicants hides and waits amongst them for Deckard. This ‘home’ is dark, confusing and has a sense of mystery and history that makes us uneasy
